1. Sew your initials in blue on the inside of your dress. You can also include you wedding date and your husband-to-be’s name. I love this idea because it is hidden (sort of like the garter) but it adds meaning to your dress, especially if you are keeping your dress as a family heirloom.
2. A blue locket. This is perfect, especially if you are using the idea from “something old”, and incorporating a picture in a locket on your bouquet. This locket is also from etsy.
3. A stunning blue necklace. I love the necklace in the picture shown. I think it would look lovely with a simple wedding gown. This is one of my etsy finds, and the seller I found it on has many other beautiful pieces of jewelry. Check it out!

1. Jewelry. This is probably one of the most popular items to borrow for your wedding day. Besides borrowing from friends, sometime your jeweler will lend you out items also. I think borrowing from friends is more meaningful though. I borrowed a necklace and earrings from a close family friend on my wedding day and it added such meaning to what I was wearing.

2. A handkerchief. This can be borrowed from a grandmother or your own mother, and might come in handy throughout the day!

3. A cute little clutch. I don’t know about you, but I wish I would have had a cute little purse on my wedding day. I had a Trader Joe’s bag!! Of course it never came out of the room into public, but I think a cute little purse would have been perfect. Heaven knows my grandma had plenty of cute ones laying around. I’m sure a close family member or friend wouldn’t mind lending you their purse for the day; that way you won’t have to have a Trader Joe’s bag! 1. Attach the key to your new home to your bouquet. It actually doesn’t even have the be the actual key. It could be a neat old key and you could pretend its the key to your new house! You could also pin the key somewhere on the inside of your dress.

1. Attach a locket to your bouquet. This locket can contain a picture of your husband-to-be as a child, or a picture of a family member such as your mother or grandparents. This is a fairly popular idea right now, and I think its a great way to bring something old into your wedding celebration.
2. Use the diamond from a great grandma or great aunt’s engagement ring in your own ring. I love this idea because the “something old” then stays with you all the time….well, as long as you wear the ring at least! I think its a very special way to incorporate something old, not to mention eco-friendly as well! In my engagement ring, my main diamond is from my great aunt’s engagement ring. I love it because I can look at it and think of her.
3. Wear a piece of jewelry that’s been in your family for a while. It can be a small bracelet, a pair of earrings, or a dainty ring you can wear on your right hand. Wearing something that has meaning to you always adds a special spirit to your day.

Something old, something new,
Something borrowed, something blue,
A silver sixpence in her shoe

That’s the little poem that started the whole tradition. It was said that the wearing of such items on your wedding day was to bring good luck. The poem dates back to the time of Queen Victoria, which we referenced on our history of the white wedding dress here. Each item represents something different.
Something old represents the bride’s ancestors. Traditionally, the bride would wear a piece of jewelry that was handed down through generations of her family.
Something new shows that the bride is looking towards the future.
Something borrowed was usually a token borrowed from a happily married friend or relative, in hopes that their luck in marriage would transfer to the newly married couple.
Something blue symbolizes purity. This color is believed to come from the Virgin Mary, who is most often portrayed in a blue robe.
A silver sixpence in her shoe is a Scottish tradition of the groom putting a silver sixpence in his own shoe to represent financially wealth and security. Now days, it is usually the bride who puts the sixpence in her shoe.
